Children display creativity from a very young age, but it’s possible to heighten their learning using effective parenting techniques. However, you have to be careful about cultivating this, as you don’t want to stifle their creativity by pressuring them to get involved.
With creativity helping kids develop positive intellectual and emotional straits alongside strong social skills, guide your children’s choices by giving them the tools and support they need to ensure they explore their creative side.
Present Art Supplies
Kids will use anything to create, but providing them with a wide range of art supplies is a great way to support them on their journey. Alongside a dedicated space for creative time, consider adding paints, crayons, brushes and even an easel with plenty of paper.
In addition, children looking to create will benefit from colouring books, building blocks and props for a theatre production. With the right tools available at home, you ensure their artistic options are virtually limitless.
Encourage Experimentation
Fostering your child’s creativity means providing them with plenty of inspiration. How can you achieve this? Consider taking them to a library where they can discover an enormous variety of books dedicated to their favourite topics.
Art galleries and museums are also a stellar choice. By organising a trip to a local exhibition to see a collection of works, you can get their brains ticking over with endless ideas that they’ll explore when they get back home.
Set Aside Time for Creating
Allow your children the time to create. While you want to remain flexible about overly structuring your child’s free time, reserving a few mornings or afternoons during the week ensures they have the freedom to create regularly.
Ideally, they head straight for their paintbrushes or building blocks when they have the chance. However, if your children just want to watch television or use the iPad, negotiate a compromise where they commit to at least some creative time.
Foster Creative Thinking
Trips to a local art exhibition or theatre performance are a great way to inspire your children. But you can also help foster their creativity by asking their opinion on what they’ve seen. This discussion on the themes and aesthetics might spark a creative burst.
Meanwhile, get them to reflect on the artwork they create at home. By asking how they approached specific problems and overcame them with a creative solution, they’ll have more ideas for their future projects.
