  • It’s Nearly Time for Togs – Guide to Buying Bathers (for your kids, not you)

It’s Nearly Time for Togs – Guide to Buying Bathers (for your kids, not you) - The Nappy Shop

Ah, summer in Australia! That time of year when the beach is calling, the backyard pool turns into an oasis, and the mozzies launch their annual assault. But before you let the kids into the nearest body of water, you’ll need to gear them up with the right bathers.

The world of kids’ swimwear can be a bit overwhelming—rashies, boardies, one-pieces, two-pieces, and swim nappies galore. Not to worry, my friend! I’m here to help you find the perfect togs for your little swimmers.

Slip, Slop, Slap, and Suit Up!

Here in Australia, the sun isn’t messing around. Before your kids even think about cannonballing into the pool, you’ll want to make sure their bathers offer proper UV protection. Look for swimwear that’s UPF 50+ rated, which blocks 98% of harmful rays. Long-sleeved rashies are ideal—because the less skin you have to sunscreen, the better.

Bonus: If you’re wrestling a wriggly toddler, having a rashie means fewer opportunities for them to rub sunscreen in their eyes (or in yours). Trust me, it’s a lifesaver.

Style vs. Practicality – A Tale as Old as Time

Your kid might want the bathers with unicorns, sharks, or flamingos doing yoga, but practicality comes first—unless you enjoy being the parent fishing sand out of every crevice.

For little ones, one-pieces and rashies are great because they stay put, even when the surf’s up. Boardies are comfy for older kids but beware: some come with an in-built sand collection system (otherwise known as pockets). And let’s not even talk about those swimsuits with fiddly straps—unless you enjoy untying tiny knots for an hour after swim lessons.

Tip: If you can find swimwear with zips at the front, snap it up. Zips mean no more panicked "Why won’t this come off?" moments in the change rooms.

Fit and Comfort – Avoiding the Chafe)

Ill-fitting bathers are a recipe for disaster. Too loose, and your kid spends the day adjusting themselves like a middle-aged bloke in a pub. Too tight, and you’re guaranteed some chafing-induced whingeing by the end of the day.

Make sure there’s enough stretch for active kids—after all, they’ll be diving, cannonballing, and doing underwater handstands all day. And if you’ve got a toddler in tow, swim nappies are a must (because nobody wants to be that family with an unexpected pool evacuation).

Durability – Bathers that last the season

Between saltwater, chlorine, and endless bellyflops, cheap bathers don’t stand a chance. Invest in good quality swimwear—trust me, it’s worth it. You’ll thank yourself when you’re not running back to the shops for a new pair because the first ones shredded on the first slip and slide.

Reality Check: No matter how durable the bathers, they’ll likely end up with at least one mysterious stain – probably from a poolside zooper-dooper. It’s just the circle of (parenting) life.

Design – Make them Feel Cool and Preferably Easier to Spot

While practicality reigns supreme, a little style never hurt anyone. Whether your kid fancies a tropical print or just wants to rock their favourite footy team’s colours, let them have some input. The happier they are with their bathers, the less likely they’ll kick up a stink about wearing them.

Pro Tip: Always encourage the brightest boldest patterns, you do not want your kid blending in when you’re trying to find them amongst the ten thousand little doppelgangers at the beach.

Choosing bathers for the Aussie summer doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Prioritise sun safety, comfort, and durability—and let the kids pick a design that makes them feel like the coolest kid at the pool. Now go forth, splash, and enjoy the summer—because nothing beats a glorious day at the beach, or a peaceful evening to yourself when they wear themselves out!
