Embracing the Rollercoaster: Parenting a Child with ADHD

Parenting is always a bit of a rollercoaster, filled with highs and lows, twists and turns. But when you’re parenting an ADHD child, it can sometimes feel like you're on a rollercoaster at double speed, wearing a blindfold, one heck of a ride! Buckle up for a while we talk about the ups and downs of parenting a child with ADHD! *Please note, that every child, ADHD or otherwise is different. This account is purely anecdotal and generalised.

    The Energy

One of the main symptoms of ADHD is excessive movement, basically hyperactivity (as the name suggests) so, I know you think kids have more energy in general. But, ADHD kids really wake up with a full battery, ready to take on the world, or a homemade obstacle course that requires dismantling your couch. It can be a lot. The best thing to do is to change your routine so that you are fully (or somewhat) rested. Because there is no time for the half an hour wake-up process while your coffee works its magic. You have to be prepared for (well anything really) but most likely their need for your attention and some kind of cleaning up. Or if you have the option to tag team with your partner. Take advantage and recharge whenever you can.

    Creativity Unleashed

One of the superpowers of kids with ADHD is their boundless creativity. It is an amazing thing to behold. Their train of thought can be so fast, and the ideas they come up with are incredible. They love more than anything to put on an impromptu performance. Whether it's a play, a magic show, or a wild dance party in the living room, they always give their all and it is impossible not to share their joy. Priceless. Having said that, their ideas are often BIG ideas. Think less colouring books and more enormous bedroom wall murals when you are not looking. So watch out for that too.

    The Joy of the Unexpected

Life with a child who has ADHD is full of surprises. They’re certainly entertaining but the idea of time and a place for things does not come naturally to many ADHD kids. So there is a chance your child might break into a song and dance routine while you're in a waiting room. One of the ADHD traits is constantly interrupting other people's conversations, which can be a bit stressful as you never quite know what they’re going to say next. On the upside, they keep you on your toes and make a day at the shops quite the adventure.

    The Heart-Melting Moments

Amidst the chaos, there are countless heart-melting moments. The unfiltered honesty of a child with ADHD is totally adorable. They’ll tell you they love you out of the blue, give you a random bear hug, and make you laugh with their unique perspective on the world.

    The Ultimate Problem-Solvers

Kids with ADHD have a knack for thinking outside the box. Need a creative solution? They’ve got you covered. They’ll figure out how to turn a cardboard box into a spaceship or a time machine in a minute. Looking for some fresh eyes for your bathroom? They are there to help.

Parenting a child with ADHD is like being on an endless adventure. Yes, it can be exhausting, and yes, there are days when you feel like you’re barely keeping up. But the joy, laughter, and love that come with it are immeasurable. Every day brings new challenges and triumphs, and you learn to celebrate the small victories – like successfully getting out the door with matching shoes!
