5 Tips for Dressing Your Baby in the Winter - The Nappy Shop

With the cold months upon us, now is the ideal time to think about how best to dress your baby in winter. As babies can't regulate their temperature like older people, knowing what it takes to ensure they remain comfortably warm is an important skill. However, with a little extra planning and
consideration, you’ll navigate any climate with ease. Here, we provide some quick tips on dressing your baby when the cold snap arrives.

    Focus on Layers
Layers are the most essential thing for dressing your baby in cold weather. Why? This helps them remain toasty throughout the day, while also making it easier to remove clothing should they get a bit too warm.

Start with a light onesie before adding long-sleeve shirts, a jumper and then a winter coat if the weather permits. Meanwhile, dress them in thick pants or footie pyjamas alongside snug socks to keep their feet warm.

    Add Warm Accessories
When the weather is cold enough, you want to cover every inch of their body with a warm item. This means purchasing clothing accessories such as gloves, boots, mittens and beanies to ensure they don’t get caught out.

The beanie is especially effective as everyone loses a significant portion of body heat from the head. However, just like the rest of their layers, these accessories help regulate their temperature, as you can simply remove them when needed.

Remove Bulky Jackets in the Car
Always dress your baby for cold weather before leaving the house. But if you’re heading to the car, be extra careful about their jacket impeding their safety harness. Although you might be worried about your child's warmth in the car, the thick nature of the jacket can compress during an accident, leaving them vulnerable to slipping out of their seat.

    Take Blankets Outside
Even if several clothing layers cover your baby, remember to bring some blankets on a walk with a stroller. This way, you can keep their temperature at a comfortable level with less effort, plus protect them from rain or wind should the weather get worse.

    Check for Overheating
We know babies struggle to regulate their internal temperature, so parents and guardians must often physically check how they feel. By placing your hand on their chest or back, you can see whether they feel too warm and need to remove a layer. Meanwhile, you’ll also know whether you need to add another shirt or jumper if they appear on the cooler side.
